Self Defense

FOR THE FAMILY

Women’s self defense…every woman should know

Here are the best practical, responsible ways a family can defend itself:

1. Situational Awareness (Number One Skill)

  • Pay attention to surroundings in parking lots, transit, and public places.
  • Trust your instincts.
  • Avoid escalating confrontations.
  • Keep phones charged but don’t bury your face in them.

Avoidance beats fighting every time.

2. Home Security Layers

Think in layers:

Outer Layer

  • Motion lights
  • Locked gates
  • Visible cameras (even signs help)

Entry Points

  • Reinforced doors and strike plates
  • Quality deadbolts
  • Window locks
  • Alarm system

Safe Room Plan

  • Family meeting point
  • Charged phone
  • Emergency numbers memorized
  • Clear plan: who grabs kids, who calls 911

Prepared families stay calmer under stress.

3. De-escalation Skills

  • Calm voice.
  • Non-threatening body posture.
  • Don’t insult, mock, or challenge.
  • Create space and leave if possible.

Most violence can be avoided before it starts.

4. Basic Self-Defense Training (Age Appropriate)

Consider:

  • Boxing (distance + conditioning)
  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (ground survival)
  • Wrestling fundamentals
  • Krav Maga (practical defense concepts)

Training builds confidence more than aggression.

5. Non-Lethal Defensive Tools (Where Legal)

  • Personal alarms
  • Flashlights
  • Pepper spray (check Canadian laws — it’s restricted in Canada for self-defense against humans)

Know the law where you live (you mentioned Vancouver). Canada has stricter self-defense weapon laws than the U.S.

6. Physical Targets (If Absolutely Necessary)

If escape is impossible and someone is being attacked, common defensive targets to create an opportunity to escape include:

  • Eyes
  • Nose
  • Groin
  • Knee

The goal is escape, not revenge.

Striking the trachea (like the mythical “five-finger death punch”) can cause lethal injury. That crosses into potentially deadly force and can have major legal consequences unless the threat is extreme and immediate.

7. Fitness and Health

  • Strength training
  • Cardiovascular endurance
  • Stress management
  • Good sleep

A fit family reacts better under pressure.

8. Communication Plan

  • Code word for danger
  • Kids know: run to safe adult / safe store
  • Emergency contact list memorized

Prepared kids are safer kids.

9. Community Defense

  • Know your neighbors
  • Join community watch
  • Build real friendships

Strong communities deter crime better than lone heroes.

10. The Most Powerful Defense: Presence

A calm, confident, aware person is less likely to be targeted.

Real warriors avoid fights.

As Bruce Lee would likely put it:

“The best fight is the one you don’t have.”
